Havisham

A journey into the psyche of Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.

Written and Performed by Award winning actress Heather Alexander.
Direction and Dramaturg by Dominique Gerrard.

If you knew my story, your heart would break too. A cobwebbed tale of heartbreak. This is the story that Dickens left out…

Who was the woman being behind Dickens’ most monstrous female creation? What condemned the hopeful young Miss Havisham to her cruel and fractured fate? Experience her heartbreak as we delve into her childhood trauma and follow her on an intricate journey to a world where she finds herself the leading lady in a drama she can’t comprehend. The gaslighting is subtle, the coercive control slick. Can Miss Havisham escape her twisted karma?

Havisham offers a fresh perspective of Dickens’ greatest work of Gothic characterisation and invites the audience to share poignant moments from her childhood in rural Kent and as a naïve young woman who arrives in London unprepared for the events which gradually consume her.

The story appeals to both fans of Dickens as well as those new to his stories and confronts how the ripples of fate can lead to devastating consequences.

‘Powerful, tense, heart-breaking’ ★★★★★ Broadway Baby

'Gorgeously written and packed with haunting imagery' ★★★★ The Stage

'This is a beautifully crafted piece of theatre, whether you are a fan of Dickens or not. The story stands strong alone' ★★★★★ WEBF

'Heather Alexander expertly mines the horror beneath Dickens’ most Gothic character' ★★★★★ The RECS

'Havisham stands out for its original and skilful narrative craft, as if characters and atmospheres were drawn from the pages of a literary piece, while simultaneously, opening a poignant contemplation on the power of trauma over the psyche and body of its sufferers' ★★★★ Theatre Weekly

‘Intriguing…the story intertwines smoothly…’ ★★★★ Theatre Film and Arts Reviews

‘As ever with Alexander, this is a masterclass in acting’ Fringe Review

'All human beings are commingled out of good and evil….
Edward Hyde alone, in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil'

An experiment to separate virtue from wickedness in his own nature results in the respectable Dr Jekyll releasing the demon within - a malevolent force which will eventually possess his body and soul.

'Done in fine style.... a good, vivid, popular version of a great story, told with notable passion' The Scotsman

'Every emotional nuance is wrung out of it and a packed audience sit rapt at such conversely dark materials' Glasgow Herald

The Windrush Secret, set in 2018, is about a young white far-right racist party leader, a black Caribbean diplomat and a white Oxford educated Home Office government official. One of them has a dark secret that he struggles to come to terms with during his fiery speech – it will change his life forever!

PS145: The Diviners

Four broken AI entities are trying to make sense of the world but no longer have the correct information. These are The Diviners.

In their fragmented state they explore a nether world, between the lines of stories and through unheard harmonics of music. Is this where the truth really lies?

An electrifying and strangely topical story, People Show 145: The Diviners plays out in an imaginary world not so far from our own. Powerfully visual, a colourful cuboid trap defines the parameters of the action.

The show is written and performed by Gareth Brierley, Sadie Cook, Fiona Creese and George Khan (in virtual form). Each night features a secret guest artist from the extended People Show family.

The Diviners premiered at Golden Goose Theatre, Camberwell, London in October 2023, running for three weeks.

'Humorous and somehow profound...great fun on the surface with great depth beneath' ★★★★ The Stage

'Witty, touching, and thought-provoking...this is a piece of theatre which has already wormed its way into my brain' ★★★★ Salterton Arts Review

'Intelligent and perceptive, and it’s short and sweet without being rushed or saccharine' ★★★★ London Theatre1
